From LA to Memphis: An Unforgettable Trip for a Lakers Game

“From B.B. King to the Peabody Ducks, Why Memphis is More Than Just a Basketball Town.”

When my best friend and I decided to watch a Lakers game in another city, we knew it had to be somewhere new, somewhere that would make the experience even more special. As a born-and-raised Angeleno, the Lakers are in my blood. With the season winding down and the team making a playoff push, we wanted to witness a crucial game, so we landed on Memphis, Tennessee. The city’s NBA team, the Grizzlies, was also fighting for a playoff spot, making this the perfect setting for an intense matchup.

What we didn’t expect, however, was just how incredible our Memphis experience would be beyond the game itself.

A Warm Welcome: BarDog and Late-Night Hospitality

We arrived late Wednesday night, or, more accurately, early Thursday morning, but instead of heading straight to bed, we decided to explore. A quick search led us to BarDog, a classic Memphis bar that turned out to be the perfect introduction to the city’s hospitality.

What started as a “let’s just grab one drink” kind of night quickly turned into an hours-long conversation with the bartender, who gave us the inside scoop on where to go and what to experience. Before we knew it, 3:30 AM had rolled around, and so much for that early start on Thursday!

Memphis Charm and a Legendary Burger at Huey’s

Thursday morning came with the inevitable consequence of a great night, let’s just say we needed something comforting. Enter Huey’s, a legendary regional diner that came highly recommended. The moment we stepped in, it was clear we weren’t in LA anymore. Memphis Grizzlies gear adorned the walls, along with nods to minor league baseball and a vibrant college town energy.

Now, I hadn’t had a burger in a long time, so this was a big moment for me. And let me tell you, that burger was everything. The patty was perfectly cooked, the toppings were generous, and the fries were the ideal companion. Paired with the restaurant’s cozy atmosphere, it felt like a warm hug, exactly what we needed after the previous night’s “one drink” adventure.

Beale Street and the Soul of Memphis

Our second full day in Memphis was all about Beale Street, the heart and soul of the city’s legendary blues scene. If Los Angeles has Hollywood Boulevard for entertainment, Memphis has Beale Street for music.

Our first stop? The iconic B.B. King’s Blues Club, a spot that embodies everything great about Memphis: live music, incredible food, and an electric atmosphere. This place wasn’t just a restaurant; it was an experience. As soon as we walked in, the energy was contagious, the band was playing, people were dancing, and the smell of slow-smoked barbecue filled the air.

Now, let’s talk about the food. We came for the music, but the BBQ ribs and pulled pork nearly stole the show. Tender, flavorful, and paired with classic Southern sides, it was exactly what we needed to fuel the night. But the best part? The people. Everyone was there for the same reason—to enjoy great music, good food, and soak in the vibe of Memphis. There was no pretense, no barriers—just a room full of people who wanted to be fully present in the moment.

Beale Street lived up to every bit of its legendary status. It felt like the Hard Rock Café of the blues world, authentic, historic, and alive with music that told the stories of the city.
